CLIENT NEWS: The English Garden by Mathilde Nivet at Burlington Arcade

This Summer Burlington Arcade is delighted to present The English Garden, a stunning installation by French artist Mathilde Nivet.

To create her inspired designs, Nivet starts with a sheet of paper, working with this everyday material to make the unending sculptural shapes and patterns that form her poetic work. The delicate results require an intense process of drawing, cutting and gluing before they are assembled and arranged. Using this method for The English Garden, Nivet has created two beautiful gardens to hang in the Arcade.

“England is famous for its charming gardens. This was something that struck me the most the first time I came to UK, and the magnificent London parks still continue to inspire me today. With this art installation, I wanted to pay a tribute to the beauty of the English Garden. Entirely made of paper, the drawing, assembling and installing requires hundreds of hours of work and is composed of thousands of flowers and leaves. I chose flowers which I believed to symbolise the essence of English gardens. In these two installations you will find Hydrangeas, Anemones, Wisteria, Yarrow, Dogwood, Iris, Clematis, Morning Glory, and of course, beautiful Roses. Nature and especially flowers have always been a key source of inspiration for my work and have been present in my art from the beginning. There are strong connections between my paper art and the floral world as they are both ephemeral, graceful and fragile. In addition there is perfect harmony between my creations and the craftsmanship that is synonymous with Burlington Arcade.” Mathilde Nivet

After graduating from Paris’s Ecole Duperré with a degree in textile design, Nivet began working and creating with paper, her style, skill and unique use of the medium rewarding her with early success. Nivet has worked with paper since. Her exquisite designs appearing in high profile editorials and campaigns as well as the window displays of luxury fashion houses such as Hermès, Bulgari and CHANEL. Ranging from delicate floral arrangements, explosive abstracts and miniature Parisian streets, her varied paper designs demonstrate the creative possibilities of the medium, expressing a unique and detailed aesthetic that transforms their settings.
